WMO's 8 BEST Wilderness Medicine  books

1. Going Higher, 5th Edition by Houston
-- His last and best book - the gentleman who "discovered" altitude medicine answers all in this well written masterpiece

2. Wilderness Medicine, Beyond First Aid, 6th Ed (2012) By William W. Forgey, M.D.
Doc Forgey wrote arguably the 3rd wilderness medicine book written and most easily read book on the  topic. With  each edition has had notable upgrades. I really feel this is the best book for the bucks and is an easy read easy use more so than any other including the bigger ones or high priced ones.

3. Medicine for Mountaineering 6th Edition by James Wilkerson
The first wilderness medicine written in the field and the most recognized. Dr Jim covered a lot of topics in a dry manor making this a different book than Forgeys but a compatible reference for your shelf

4. Hypothermia and Frostbite Edition 2006 [latest edition] by Wilkerson & Giesbrecht
The community is fortunate that this up date on "Cold" was written before Dr Jim passed. Dr Giesbrecht adds to the cold knowledge and is the modern successor to Dr. Jim

5. SPECIAL OPERATIONS FORCES MEDICAL HANDBOOK
- Electronic Editions DVD quick time still available - water proof hard book sold out
The definitive military remote care med book on dvd - a new edition talked about but this one is available and contains tons

6. Backcountry Medical Care - Quick Reference 4th Edition
by Carl Weil / Wilderness Medicine Outfitters
Master Fellow of Academy of Wilderness Medicine

OK I had to include 3 of my 5. This one was written after looking at most all of the existing field guides and small books. In its 4th edition it has been polished to be clear and concise for those emergencies in field where you have little but stress and usually inadequate supplies. It is waterproof with lots of drawings on how to do with little and simple but complete charting pages to help in the emergencies

7. Wilderness First Aid WMO Text 2014 edition
by Carl Weil / Wilderness Medicine Outfitters
Master Fellow of Academy of Wilderness Medicine

A simplified WFA book in verbiage and depth of care giving  going in to more depth than others in the field while being up dated semiannual and kept practical. Hard copy and electronically available

8. WMO WFR/WEMT Text - 2014 edition
by Carl Weil / Wilderness Medicine Outfitters
Master Fellow of Academy of Wilderness Medicine

The flag ship of my books which gives credit to others when I got ideas from them and shares a great deal of depth of care giving  going in to more far more depth than other WFR/WEMT books. It is up dated semiannual. Hard copy and electronically available

there are many other books today to include on your shelf but the top 5 are great and the last 3 are darn good. Carl.
